Biography of Pol Pot
Early life
Pol Pot’s real name was Saloth Sar, born on 19 May 1925 in Prek Sbauv, Cambodia. He studied at Wat Botum Vaddei school and later at Miche school in Phnom Penh.
Revolutionary activities
In 1949, Pol Pot went to France to study radio engineering and joined the French Communist Party. In 1953, he returned to Cambodia and joined the resistance against the French.
After France left Indochina, Pol Pot continued his revolutionary activities and became the leader of the Communist Party of Kampuchea.
Leading the Khmer Rouge
In 1975, the Khmer Rouge captured Phnom Penh and Pol Pot became Prime Minister of Cambodia. He implemented radical agricultural reforms aimed at building an ideal communist society.
However, Pol Pot’s regime led to the deaths of approximately 1.9 to 2.7 million Cambodians due to his harsh and brutal rule.
Downfall and death
In 1979, Vietnam attacked Cambodia and overthrew the Khmer Rouge regime. Pol Pot fled to the Thai border area and continued to fight until his death on 15 April 1998.
Legacy
The crimes of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge regime are still remembered as one of the darkest periods in Cambodian history. Prosecuting the genocide crimes of Pol Pot and his associates still faces many difficulties.
